Description
Hornhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century. It is constructed of regular coursed lias stone and features a thatched roof. The building has a 5-unit plan with cross wings on either side and stands two storeys high with an attic. The front has a five-window range of 19th-century casements set under wooden lintels; the casement on the return wall of the left cross wing includes leaded lights. There is a 20th-century glazed door to the right of the centre and a plank and braced door to the left. Each cross wing projects slightly forward; the left wing has a brick gable wall, while the right wing has been raised in brick. The roof is gabled with brick stacks at the ridge and ends. The side elevations are similar, and the rear features a series of 19th-century lean-tos. The left cross wing gable displays exposed timber framing with plaster infill, and a three-light casement with some leaded lights. There is also a single roof dormer.
Inside, the entrance hall contains an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer and a ceiling beam that is chamfered and stopped. The central room shows evidence of an open fireplace, and some first-floor rooms have chamfered beams. The roof structure features butt purlins, with some curved wind braces visible in the right cross wing.
