Description
The Grammar School and Hospital, now functioning as a school, was built in 1667 by Matthew Cole of Clipston. The building features squared coursed lias and has a 20th-century plain tiled roof. It has an E-shaped plan and consists of two storeys with an attic, comprising a seven-window range. The central gable is slightly larger and projects forward. The main entrance includes a central plank and braced door set beneath a four-centred moulded stone head with a moulded cornice above. This entrance is flanked by two 2-light stone mullioned windows with transoms, and there are similar four-light windows above the entrance, along with a three-light mullion in the attic above. The remaining windows are 2-light stone mullions located at the attic level in the gables.
There are two secondary entrances on the return walls of the flanking wings, each with moulded stone surrounds and four-centred arch heads. The building features ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, as well as a single-handed clock with an octagonal moulded stone surround in the central gable. An inscription above the main entrance reads, "This free Grammar School and Hospital were built and endowed by Sir George Buswell, Bart, AD.1667." The side and rear elevations are similar, with a 20th-century extension to the rear. The interior and rear elevations were altered in 1926, but the interior retains the original 17th-century staircase, some plank doors, and stopped chamfered ceiling beams.
