Description

The Baptist Chapel is a building dating from 1803, with alterations made by E.F. Law in 1864. It is constructed of brick and stucco, topped with a slate roof. The chapel features vestibules at the east end and is a single storey structure with a gallery. The main front, designed by Law, includes a projecting single storey porch with a three-bay open arcade that has archivolts and keystones, supported by Doric pilasters at the corners. There are three entrances, and above the porch is a three-window range of round-headed openings with moulded architraves and keystones. The windows have cast iron frames with semi-circular glazing bars at the heads. The corners of the building are accentuated with pairs of pilasters and an entablature above, featuring a dentilled cornice and an open dentilled pediment with an oculus that has four keystones. The east front also has windows with arched heads on the return wall, and large rusticated quoins. The south elevation is made of chequered brick and has a three-window range; the first-floor windows resemble those on the east front, while the ground-floor windows feature moulded stone architraves with square heads. The west elevation has blank openings with pointed heads. Attached to the right of the east front is a late 19th-century schoolroom, which has two round-headed windows, one of which projects forward with a pediment above. Inside, there is a central arched opening beneath the entrance porch, with an external flight of steps that divides into two to access the gallery. An inscribed tablet reading "Erected 1803" is positioned above the staircase. The gallery features a fielded panelled front on three sides of the chapel, with the centre section opposite the pulpit projecting as a canted bay, and is supported by cast iron columns.
