Description
The parterre, retaining wall, and steps were built around 1909 to 1912 by Sir Edwin Lutyens and are located approximately 30 meters east of the Manor House in Ashby St. Ledgers. The retaining walls are made of uncoursed limestone and ironstone rubble, topped with ironstone coping. The steps, paving, and balustrade are crafted from limestone ashlar. There is a wall with a balustrade and a flight of semi-circular steps at each end, which lead down from the lawn east of the Manor House to a paved parterre featuring flower beds arranged in geometric patterns. Similar steps can be found at the north and south approaches to the parterre. This area is also at the head of a sunken canal garden, which was also designed by Lutyens.
