Description
Manor House, dating to the late 17th century, is constructed of ironstone ashlar with old tile roofs and brick and stone lateral stacks. It is an incomplete H-plan building, originally with a five-window range over a basement and attic. The principal entrance features a six-panel door set within a moulded stone surround, topped with a segmental pediment supported by carved stone console brackets, and approached by six moulded stone steps with a plain stone balustrade. Flanked by mullion and transom windows with moulded stone sills and surrounds, the first floor window above the door is blocked. A projecting two-bay wing to the right has chamfered quoins and similar windows, with the first-floor window on the right also blocked. An incomplete single-storey wing to the left has a lean-to slate roof and a blocked window with a simple moulded stone surround. The building features a chamfered plinth, a storey band, a moulded and bracketed wood eaves cornice, and a hipped roof. A large stone stack is located on the inner side of the projecting wing, with a plain flue at the front and twin blank arcades with round heads to the rear flue. The right-hand side elevation, with four windows, has a central two-bay projection with a six-panel door and overlight to the left, accessed by an external staircase with moulded stone steps and plain wrought-iron balustrade. A tall window extends through the ground and first floors, lighting the staircase. A basement door has a simple moulded stone surround and a part-glazed plank door. Narrow windows are present on the return sides of the projection, and all windows on this side possess simple moulded stone surrounds with slate roofing. The rear elevation includes a lean-to with a slate roof, a portion of poorer masonry structure for the attic, a plank door with a straight hood, a three-light basement window, a three-light casement window to the first floor with a timber lintel, and a roof dormer. The projecting wing to the left, of two bays, has a 15-pane sash window on the first floor to the right, with the rest of the windows blocked. The unfinished wing to the right displays chamfered quoins and a section of storey band matching the wing to the left. Lateral stacks are on the inner side of the projecting wings and incorporate blue brick flues. The interior contains an open well staircase leading to the attic, with turned balusters. Bolection-moulded stone fireplaces are found in the hall and other rooms, along with moulded stone doorcases. The building's construction began around 1695 and was never completed; dates 1697 and 1699 are inscribed in the stonework of the basement.
