Description
The Convent is a house that likely dates from the late 16th century and was altered in the mid 19th century. It features close-studded timber framing and painted brick, with lathe and plaster and brick infill panels, topped by a thatched roof. The building has a three-unit lobby entry plan and stands two storeys high, with a three-window range of 19th-century horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars on the first floor, and 20th-century casements with glazing bars on the ground floor.
There is a blocked window between the first-floor windows on the left that may be an original 16th-century opening, and a blocked doorway to the right of centre. The two bays to the centre and left showcase exposed timber framing with diagonal wind braces on the first floor, while the ground floor is infilled with brickwork. The bay on the right was reconstructed in brick in the mid 19th century. The windows are set under shallow brick arches, and the blocked door on the far right has a similar arch. A central brick and stone stack, which is now rendered, is present.
The rear elevation is similar, featuring a 20th-century door and porch to the right of centre, along with exposed timber framing in the centre and right sections. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to include an open fireplace and ceiling beams.
