Description
The curtain wall, gates, and gatepiers located approximately 50 meters north and west of Rockingham Castle are likely built along the line of an 11th-century outer wall, with most of the structure dating from the 17th and 19th centuries. The base is made of limestone ashlar, while the upper courses consist of squared coursed ironstone, topped with ashlar coping and ball finials at intervals. Ashlar buttresses are also present at intervals. The west face at the end of the yew walk features 18th-century ashlar gatepiers that are connected by a wrought iron gate adorned with an overthrow and leaf decoration. There is a flight of stone steps attached to the left of the gate. The north-west corner and the position of the gates are believed to be the sites of towers in the curtain wall. The garden of Rockingham Castle is listed in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
