Description

Chester House is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It dates from the late 17th century and 18th century. The building is constructed from regular coursed limestone and features a slate roof. Originally, it had a four-unit plan, likely with a lobby-entry, and now has a T-shape. The house is two storeys high with an attic.

The main front has a five-window range that includes two- and three-light stone-mullioned windows with leaded lights and hood moulds. Two windows on the ground floor to the right have 20th-century casements. There is a 19th-century wooden porch to the left of the centre and a 20th-century door to the right of the centre. A gabled cross wing that projects to the left is probably from the early 18th century and features sash windows with glazing bars under gauged stone heads. A small projecting wing to the right of the cross wing is similar to the main house. The gable parapets and stacks at the ridge and ends are made of ashlar.

The garden front to the left of the cross wing has a two-window range of 18th-century sashes with glazing bars on the first floor, with a central sash located between the floors. There are two 19th-century wooden bays on the ground floor. The rear of the house is similar, featuring a three-window range of three-light stone-mullioned windows and a 19th-century stone bay window on the ground floor.

Attached limestone walls at right angles to the right of the main front incorporate fragments of an ancient capital. A similar wall attached to the left of the main front is part of the kitchen garden walls, with the kitchen garden wall located approximately 20 meters southwest of Chester House. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have the original staircase.
