Description

Number 53 and 55, along with the attached outbuildings, is a house and former stables that have been converted into two shops and a flat. The building dates from the early 18th century and the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed of regular coursed limestone with a painted facade and features a concrete tile roof at the front and a part pantile roof at the rear. Originally, it had a two-unit plan and consists of two storeys and an attic.

The first floor has a three-window range of sash windows with glazing bars; the windows on the left and right are tripartite, all set beneath stop-chamfered lintels. The ground floor features an early 20th-century shop front with a six-panel door located to the far right, accompanied by glazed toplights. There are also a pair of flat-topped roof doors. The building has ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, along with a brick stack at the end.

To the right, there is an additional bay that is 18th century and constructed differently, slightly projecting from the main range. This bay has an unhorned sash window with glazing bars on the first floor and an early 20th-century shop front on the ground floor, which includes two part-glazed double doors with a fascia above.

At the rear, there is a former 18th-century stable that features irregularly spaced casements and three Lincolnshire dormers, with the gable end being weatherboarded. The interiors of the shops have ceiling beams that are now boxed.
