Description
No. 32 High Street is a house that has been converted into a residence and two shops. It likely dates from the early to mid-18th century and was altered in the mid-19th century. The building features squared coursed limestone and ironstone, with some parts rendered, while the street-facing elevation is made of brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles from the 20th century. Originally, the layout was probably a three-unit plan oriented at right angles to the road. The building stands three storeys tall, with the street elevation consisting of a single-window range that includes 19th-century canted wooden bay windows with sash windows on the first and second floors. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front that has been modified in the 20th century. The roof is a mansard style with a brick and stone chimney stack at the ridge. The right elevation features a three-window range with irregularly spaced sash and casement windows beneath wooden lintels. On the second floor to the left, there is a three-light leaded casement window. The central entrance has a four-panel door that is partly glazed. This elevation appears to have two planes, suggesting it may have been built in two stages. Inside, the center room retains the remains of an open fireplace along with salt cupboards, and there are some fielded panelled doors. The bay facing the street may have originally been timber-framed.
