Description
Pear Tree Cottage is a house with an attached outbuilding, dating from the 1740s, with later alterations in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A datestone inscribed "E/JA/1747" indicates the original construction date, although the front facade was altered in the late 18th century. The house is built of squared coursed limestone, while the outbuilding is partly timber-framed. It has a Collyweston and Welsh slate roof.
The cottage is originally a two-unit plan and has three storeys. The front elevation features a two-window range of 20th-century casement windows set within late 18th-century sash window openings, all under wooden lintels. A central 20th-century casement window is located on the second floor. The central entrance has a six-panel, part-glazed door, also under a wooden lintel, and is sheltered by an arched hood. The front is finished with an ashlar gable parapet, and brick stacks are at the ends. The front roof was raised in the early 19th century. The attached outbuilding to the left has a central 20th-century door under a wooden lintel and retains remains of an ashlar gable parapet to the left. The rear wall is constructed of close-studded timber framing with brick infill.
The interior was not inspected, but it is noted to contain remains of an open fireplace with a bressumer. An ancient espalier pear tree stands on the gable end.
