Description
No. 9, Church Street is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone, with a rendered and painted facade. The roof is covered in Collyweston slate. The house has an L-shaped plan and is a single storey with an attic. The front features a three-window range of 19th-century casement windows. The window on the far right has a moulded stone surround, and the centre window has a canted bay with a slate roof. There are three gabled eaves dormers with 19th-century casements. A six-panel door with glazed top lights is located to the left of centre, sheltered by a wooden hood with a slate roof. The roof is gabled, with a 19th-century hipped lean-to on the right. Brick and stone stacks are present at the ridge and end of the building. A rear wing mirrors the design of the main building. Inside, the entrance hall and room on the far right feature open fireplaces with bressumers. Remnants of an 18th-century plaster cornice are visible in the centre room and a first-floor room. Until 1868, the house was part of Browne's Hospital of Stamford.
