Description

31 and 35 Chapel Street is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It dates from the mid to late 17th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from squared coursed limestone and features a Collyweston slate roof. Originally, it had a three-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic.

The ground floor presents an irregular five-window range. There are two three-light stone mullion windows at the far left and right ends, with a central two-light stone mullion window and a modified two-light window to the right. To the left of centre, there is a single-light window with a moulded stone surround. A 20th-century plank door, located to the left of centre under a stone lintel, has a three-light stone mullion window above it. The ground floor windows all have hood moulds.

The exterior features a chamfered plinth, ashlar quoins, and ashlar gable parapets. There are brick and stone stacks at the ridge and ends. The left gable has two single-light attic windows with moulded stone surrounds, while the right gable has one similar window. There are 19th-century lean-to extensions on the left and rear sides. The rear elevation includes 20th-century casement windows. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have spine beams and a first-floor fireplace with an ogee-moulded surround.
