Description

The Old Hautboy is a house dated 1648, with extensions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of regularly coursed limestone and features thatch and Collyweston slate roofs. Originally designed with a two-unit plan, it has been altered to an L-shape. The main front has a four-window arrangement, including two 2-light stone mullion windows on the left and two 19th-century casements under wooden lintels on the right. There is a central fire window and an eyebrow dormer with a 19th-century casement window. The gable ends are finished with ashlar parapets and have brick stacks at the ridge and ends. The right side has two bays that were likely added in the early to mid-18th century, and it features 20th-century casement windows. The left gable has a projecting chimney breast and 19th-century style casements. The rear elevation mirrors the front with similar 19th-century style casement windows and an eyebrow dormer. A 20th-century porch is located at the rear, and there is a 19th-century extension that also has Collyweston slate roofs. Inside, the center room contains an open fireplace with a bressumer, and the room to the left of the main front has a date inscribed on the spine beam. Some of the doors are made of planks and have strap hinges. The building served as the Hautboy and Fiddle Public House from the 18th century until the mid-20th century.
