Description

Brewery Cottage and the attached dovecote are located on Main Street in Sudborough. The dovecote likely dates from the late 17th century to the early 18th century and features a datestone marked TSM/1777. The house is probably from the late 18th century and includes elements from the 19th century. The dovecote is constructed of squared coursed limestone, while the house is made of brick, both topped with slate roofs. The house originally had a two-unit plan and is two storeys high, with a three-window range of 19th-century casements beneath shallow brick arches. There is a central 19th-century four-panel door also under a similar arch. Brick stacks are located at both ends, and there is a late 19th-century extension at the rear.

The dovecote is attached to the left corner of the main front and features a central 19th-century casement window beneath a wooden lintel. To the left, there is a 20th-century door, and to the right, a 19th-century panelled door, both under wooden lintels. A similar window is found in the left gable. Inside the house, there are early to mid-19th-century fireplaces in all rooms, and the room to the left of the entrance likely has a blocked open fireplace. The interior of the dovecote shows nesting boxes visible on two walls. Originally, the dovecote served Brooke House, and the datestone likely refers to Brewery Cottage, which is said to have been built by the owners of Brooke House for an unmarried relative.
