Description

The Poplars is a house dating from the 17th century, with a datestone marked BM/1625, and features late 18th to early 19th-century elements. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and has a Collyweston slate roof. Originally designed as a three-unit structure, it now has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic.

The main façade presents a three-window arrangement of 19th-century unhorned sash windows. The ground floor windows are tripartite sashes with glazing bars, while the first-floor flanking windows are eight-pane sashes, and the central first-floor window includes margin lights. All windows have plastered and painted surrounds. The entrance features double six-panel doors with a moulded stone surround, keyblock, and cornice, approached by a shallow flight of moulded steps.

There are two hipped eaves dormers with sash windows, and the building has ashlar gable parapets on the left side, as well as ashlar ridge and end stacks with moulded cornices. A two-window range on the right side projects forward at a lower eaves level than the main range, featuring 19th-century sash and casement windows under wooden lintels. The gable end has two single-light windows that are now blocked, and the datestone is located at the apex of the gable.

An attached single-storey extension on the gable end has an ashlar end stack. The elevation facing the road includes some 19th-century casement windows with ashlar surrounds and keyblocks, along with one two-light stone mullion window. The interior has not been inspected but likely contains remnants of open fireplaces.
