Description
29 and 35 Bridge Street are two almshouses that were originally built as four in 1749, founded by Elizabeth Hutcheson. The buildings are made of finely squared coursed limestone and have a Collyweston slate roof. They are single-storey structures that originally featured two-unit plans. The front comprises a ten-window range with 20th-century casements set under concrete lintels. There are two recessed porches with 20th-century doors and windows located between the window ranges. The gable ends have ashlar parapets, and there are ashlar ridge and end stacks with moulded cornices. A central tablet above the entrance bears the inscription "Viduanum Hospitium 1749" and has a moulded cornice above it. The almshouses were converted into two units in the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected. These buildings are included for their group value.
