Description
The School House is a building that was originally a school and schoolhouse, now converted into a house. It has a datestone from 1752, indicating a rebuilding, although it was founded as a school in 1727 by William Law. The structure is made of squared coursed limestone and features a Collyweston slate roof. It is likely that the original layout was a two-unit plan, with the school room occupying most of the upper storey.
The building has two storeys and a four-window range of leaded cross windows, which are set under wooden lintels and have ashlar dressings. There is a small circular window on the first floor to the left. A six-panel door, located to the right of centre, is also under a wooden lintel. The gable ends have ashlar parapets and stone stacks. Above the door, there is a panel with the inscription "Charitati Sacrum 1752".
Attached to the right is a one-bay outbuilding, which is now part of the house and features a plank door to the left. This outbuilding also has ashlar gable parapets and a lateral stone stack. The rear elevation includes a central leaded casement window under a wooden lintel, while the gable end facing Bridge Street is blank. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have a fielded panelled screen beside the staircase, a cupboard under the stairs with a wooden ventilation grille, and splat balusters leading to the first-floor landing.
