Description
71-77 High Street is an inn that has been converted into a house and two shops. It dates from the mid-18th century and 19th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone with a stucco facade. The rear features a pantile roof, while the front has a concrete tile roof. Originally, it had a four-unit plan and stands two storeys tall. The front has a nine-window range with irregularly spaced unhorned sash windows that include glazing bars, all set under plain stucco heads with keyblocks. To the right of the center, there is a four-panel part-glazed door beneath a similar head, accompanied by a later 19th-century shop front to the right and a 20th-century shop front to the far left. The building features ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, with brick stacks located at the center ridge and ends. The rear elevation includes 19th-century additions and windows from both the 19th and 20th centuries. Inside, the center room has an open fireplace with a bressumer. This building was formerly known as the Golden Key Inn until the early 19th century.
