Description

Thrapston Baptist Church is a Baptist church dating from 1787, with a mid-19th century extension at the rear. It is constructed of stone with brick facades and has lead and slate roofs. The building is a single-storey chapel with a gallery and a two-storey school room at the back. The main front features a five-window range at the first floor, with restored cross casements that have plain arch heads and keyblocks. On the ground floor, there are two similar windows in the center, flanked by six-panel doors, each with arch-head fanlights and keyblocks. To the far left, an arch-head opening provides access to a passage leading to the rear. The flat roof is not visible behind a rebuilt brick parapet, which has a partially legible inscribed tablet with the date at its center. The mid-19th century school room extension is located at the rear. Inside the chapel, there is a gallery on three sides with a fielded panelled front and a reeded frieze below, supported by square reeded columns. The interior was partially remodeled in the mid-20th century. Various late 18th and 19th century inscribed marble tablets adorn the walls, including those for Mary and Thomas Ekins, who died in 1794, and Rev. Reynold Hogg, who died in 1843 and was the first minister and first treasurer of the Baptist Missionary Society. The chapel was opened on March 27th, 1788. The former Manse, No. 31, is attached to the left side of the main front of the church.
