Description
Blacksmiths Cottage is a house located on Main Street in Fotheringhay, originally listed as The Blacksmiths Cottage and Post Office. It dates from the late 18th century and 19th century and is constructed of squared coursed limestone with roofs made of Collyweston slate, asbestos slate, and pantiles. The building has an original two-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with a two-window range.
The first floor features leaded casements with some original glass set under wood lintels, while the ground floor has early 20th-century casements, also under wood lintels. A central door from the 20th century is located under a wood lintel as well. There are stone stacks at both ends of the house.
To the left, there is a 19th-century outbuilding with a pantile roof that has been incorporated into the main house. The rear elevation includes two leaded casements with some original glass, again under wood lintels, and there is a lean-to extension at the rear with an asbestos slate roof. Although the interior was not inspected, it is likely that the room to the left of the entrance has an open fireplace.
