Description

The Old Rectory is a rectory that has been converted into a house, with a datestone indicating it was rebuilt in 1717 by Sir James Burrough for Peter Needham. It was likely partially remodeled in the 19th century. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone with an ashlar facade and has a felted and battened roof. It features a double depth plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic. The main front has a five-window range, with a central boarded door that has a moulded stone architrave and a flight of steps leading up to it. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, also feature moulded stone architraves. There is a raised string course between the floors and a moulded stone cornice. The hipped roof is topped with stone stacks. To the left of the main elevation, there is a long arch-head stair window, also with glazing bars. The rear elevation, which also has a five-window range of sash windows under stone lintels, was likely remodeled in the mid-19th century. A central ashlar porch with a panelled door features the datestone. Although the interior was not inspected, photographs indicate it has an 18th-century staircase with three turned balusters per tread and fielded panelled rooms. The rebuilding in 1717 cost £1,000, and the previous rectory was the home of William Dolbens.
