Description
The Stanwick War Memorial is located in the southern part of the churchyard of St Laurence Church, which is a Grade I listed building. The memorial stands approximately 5 meters tall and is made of sandstone. It features a Latin cross, adorned with a crown of thorns at its center, mounted on a tapering octagonal shaft. This shaft is set on a small square plinth, which in turn rests on a stepped, four-stage octagonal base, with the lowest stage made of concrete.
On the front of the plinth, there is an inscription in raised lettering that reads "THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ THEIR NAME SHALL LIVE/ FOR EVER MORE." Below this, the dates "1939 – 1945" have been added in the same style on the moulded foot of the plinth. The names of those who fell in the First World War are recorded on the side panels, while the names of those lost in the Second World War are inscribed around the moulded foot.
