Description

Islip House is a country house located on Chapel Hill in Islip, dating from the mid to late 18th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone with stuccoed facades and features roofs made of Collyweston and Welsh slate. The house has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with an attic and basement. The main front, which faces the garden, has a seven-window range. The central entrance features a part-glazed door with a moulded wood surround and a fanlight with glazing bars. The windows are sash style, also with glazing bars. The hipped roof is set behind a plain parapet and has three flat-topped dormers, with brick and stone stacks at the ridge.

To the right, there is a two-window-range extension that was remodelled in the 20th century. The entrance front, located to the left of the main front, has a five-window range similar to the main front but with plain sash windows on the ground floor. The central panelled double doors also have a fanlight with glazing bars. A flight of steps with a wrought-iron handrail leads down to a basement-level walkway. The rear of the house includes 19th-century brick extensions. The garden front is flanked by attached brick walls, each featuring a 20th-century iron gate set between 18th-century ashlar gatepiers.

Inside, the staircase at the entrance front is likely from the 18th century and has turned balusters. The main staircase leading to the garden front has a stick balustrade, which was probably altered in the 20th century.
