Description

Riverside Cottages are two houses dating from the early to mid-17th century. They are constructed from squared coursed limestone and feature Collyweston slate roofs. Originally, they were one-and two-unit cottages arranged in an L-shape. The cottages are single storey with attics. The main front has two bays on the left, with a leaded casement window under a wooden lintel to the left. There are two eaves dormers in the attic, one with a leaded casement and the other with a 20th-century casement. To the right, there is a plank door beneath a shallow stone arch. The left gable has an ashlar parapet and ashlar stacks at the ridge and end. A lean-to extension is attached to the left side.

To the right, there is a range that extends at right angles, consisting of two bays with one window. This section has a casement window under a wooden lintel on the ground floor and an eaves dormer in the attic. The gable end features a casement window in the attic under a wooden lintel and a six-panel door to the left, also under a wooden lintel. A lean-to with a pantile roof is attached to the right. The elevation on the right has two bays with a one-window range, featuring a leaded casement under a wooden lintel to the left. The central plank door, also under a wooden lintel, has decorative elements at the top of the frame, likely dating from the 17th century. There is a central ashlar stack.

The rear elevation includes a three-light stone mullion window on the right. Although the interiors were not inspected, they are noted to have open fireplaces, which are now blocked, a winder staircase, and one 17th-century fireplace with an ashlar surround. The cottages served as the parish poorhouse from around 1775 to 1834.
