Description
The Woodford War Memorial is located in the churchyard at St Mary’s Church, which is listed as Grade I. The memorial features a limestone Calvary that stands approximately 6 meters high, set atop a tapering octagonal shaft. The shaft rises from a crenellated base, which is placed on an octagonal plinth that sits on a shallow octagonal base.
On the plinth, the years 1939-1945 are inscribed, along with the names of those commemorated, which are also listed on the flanking plinth faces. The names of those who died in the First World War are engraved on a slate plaque affixed to the north face of the church tower, located behind the memorial. This plaque includes the principal inscription: "THIS CROSS IS DEDICATED TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY OF BRAVE MEN OF WOODFORD WHO/ LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918."
