Description

The Warkton War Memorial is a Clipsham stone cross dating from the early 20th century. It stands approximately 3.5 metres high, located to the east of the chancel of St Edmund’s church, directly east of the altar. The memorial consists of a bottonée cross at the apex of an octagonal shaft, which rises from a square plinth. The plinth sits upon a two-stage octagonal base, surrounded by a gravel path edged with stone.

Inscriptions are carved on the plinth in raised lettering. The south face reads: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF THE MEN FROM THIS/ PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR,/ 1914-1919.” The west face states: “ERECTED BY/ RELATIVES, PARISHIONERS,/ AND FRIENDS/ AS A TOKEN OF/ HONOUR AND RESPECT.” The north face includes the phrase: “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT HE LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS.” Finally, the east face lists five names and the words: “THEIR NAMES LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.”
