Description
Nos. 21 and 23 High Street are a pair of houses built in 1877, designed by George Devey as gardeners' cottages for the Lilies Estate. They are constructed of red brick featuring a diaper pattern with blue headers, and have tile hanging on the far gable. The houses have a tiled roof and brick chimneys with offset heads. A band course runs along the first floor, and the shaped gables are topped with segmental pediments. The buildings are two storeys tall with two main bays. The wooden casements have single horizontal glazing bars and segmental relieving arches. The right bay is gabled, featuring a three-light casement on the ground floor, paired casements on the first floor, and a small blind roundel above. To the left, there is a depressed brick arch that is chamfered and has a stone keyblock, leading to a 20th-century door set in a recess. The left bay has one casement on the ground floor. An external chimney is located on the right side, with a lean-to at its base, along with other small lean-tos at the rear.
