Description

The Old School West is a former school building, dated 1899, and now converted into two houses. It was designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Medmenham Abbey and Danesfield. The building is constructed of dressed chalk block with sandstone dressings, featuring plain tile roofs and stone coped gables with moulded kneelers. It has a U-shaped plan, with a taller central wing and gabled flanking wings, connected by angle lobbies.

The central wing has a row of ten almost continuous cross windows with leaded glazing, and a central chimney with an inscription tablet, arched hood over a belfry, and a brick shaft. The brick shaft incorporates 'V' pilasters and an off-set head. A similar chimney is located to the rear left of the building. The side wings feature paired cross casements in their gables, with alterations to the left windows, which include raised central lights. The angle lobbies have parapets, two-light windows facing forward, and panelled doors set within four-centred arches with carved spandrels.
