Description
Hillside and Little States are two former laundry buildings, now converted into houses, dating from around 1898 to 1900. They were designed by Romaine Walker for Mr. Robert Hudson of Medmenham Abbey and Danesfield. The lower storey is constructed of dressed chalk blocks, while the upper storey features roughcast and whitewashed walls, topped with a plain tile roof and brick chimneys that have 'V' pilasters and offset heads, giving the buildings a picturesque appearance.
The structure is two storeys high with an attic and consists of approximately six bays. It has leaded windows with ovolo-moulded mullions, with chalk used for the ground floor and wood for the upper storeys. The two central bays are slightly advanced and have gables that overhang on a coved jetty, supported by a moulded bressumer. Below the bressumer, there is a long strip of 24 transomed lights, divided into three groups of eight by narrow recessed panels. The gables contain three-light attic casements, although the left one has been altered.
The ground floor windows have been modified to include paired leaded casements in wooden frames, while the outer bays feature irregular ground floor windows and a gabled dormer with a paired leaded casement on the right. Additionally, there are two panelled doors framed by moulded and stopped chalk surrounds, featuring four-centred arches and carved spandrels.
