Description

Helsthorpe Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and later centuries. The house was originally timber-framed, though much of this is now concealed. The eastern side of the rear wing retains some exposed close studding with slanted thin brick infill to the first floor. The remainder of the house has been refaced in brick at various times, with the upper right bay tile-hung. The roof is covered in old tiles, and a square chimneystack of thin brick runs between the right-hand bays, inserted in the 17th century. The house has a T-shaped plan and two storeys. The south front consists of three irregular bays, with the left bay slightly set back. The first floor has five irregular barred wooden casement windows. The ground floor has a 20th-century window to the left, a wide tripartite barred sash with a segmental head in the centre, and a pair of later 19th-century sashes to the right. A flush-panelled door is located between the right bays, and has a gabled wooden hood supported on shaped brackets. A Sun Fire Insurance plaque is positioned above the door. Early 20th-century extensions have been added to the rear. Inside, the central ground floor room has chamfered cross beams, one of which has a north end stopped on a chamfered post with a bracket carved into the jowl. A ground floor room in the rear wing has a moulded beam.
