Description
The Post Office, located at 77 The Broadway, is a building dating from the 17th century and earlier. It features stucco on the exterior, with 19th-century ground floor windows added for the Post Office. The structure consists of two joined buildings, highlighted by a large brick chimney stack from around 1620-1630, which has a square base and four shafts. The left wing has two storeys with an oversailing first floor, while the right wing features quoins, an entablature at the eaves level, and a two-storey oriel bay on both the first and second floors. Inside, the building originally contained a 17th-century chimneypiece, which has since been removed, but it still retains an original 17th-century staircase with newel posts, turned balusters, moulded handrails, and a close string.
