Description

Elizabeth House, also known as the Post Office, is a building dating from the 17th century, with a rendered front elevation and a rear wall of red brick. It is L-shaped, and stands two storeys high with attics. A string course steps up above the sash windows, one on either side of the central entrance door. The roof is tiled, incorporating bonnet hips, and features a central chimney. East of the sash windows are two cast iron casements with glazing bars. Above are wooden casements and dormers. A gabled porch, dating from the 19th century, is situated at the front. A single-storey flint-faced projection extends from the rear. Inside, two ingle fireplaces are located within the central chimney stack, and one is in the two-storey wing. Much original timber framing and roof timbers are exposed. The building was used as a workhouse between 1724 and 1834.
