Description
The Parish Church of St John the Baptist dates from 1320 to 1325 during the primacy of Simon de Mepham and was somewhat rebuilt after an earthquake in 1326. It is constructed of ragstone and flint and features a large chancel, a Lady Chapel (now serving as a vestry), a two-aisled nave, a west tower, and north and south porches. There were restorations in the 19th century, including reroofing in 1858, raising the tower, and refurnishing the chancel in 1874. The interior includes a fine pulpit from 1682 that originally came from St Margaret's Westminster, as well as wall tablets in the chancel by R J Wyatt and E B Stephens, and in the north aisle to K Marten by T Beard from 1750.
