Description

Turpins Row is a range of 17th-century timber-framed buildings located on the north side of Amersham High Street. It was later altered in the 18th century, with brick infill and a refronting to numbers 167-177. A datestone on the north wall is inscribed with the year 1798. The building has an old tiled roof. The row consists of two storeys and includes thirteen first-floor casement windows. Most cottages feature a single 3-light casement window, with number 167 having two 2-light casements and a central door, and number 189 having an additional 2-light casement. Number 165 is a timber-framed wing at the east end. The west gable of number 189 is also timber-framed. The rear elevation is picturesque, with dormers, hipped and gabled wings – the eastern sections (numbers 185-9) are old, while the centre is more modern.
