Description

55 The Avenue is a house that dates from the late medieval period, with alterations made in the 17th century and extensions added in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with whitewashed brick and plaster infill, and whitewashed rubble stone at the base of the right bay. It has hipped thatch roofs, and a chimney stack that was rebuilt in the 20th century between the right bays.

The main range consists of three bays, with a projection from the front of the left bay that dates from the 17th to 18th century, which was formerly an outbuilding. There are also 20th-century extensions at the northeast corner. The house is one storey with an attic. The main range has paired leaded casements in the centre bay, with the upper window set in thatch and a tiled apron below, along with a small leaded light aligned with the fireplace. The right side and rear feature 19th-century three-light wooden casements with vertical glazing bars on the ground floor, and upper windows also in thatch. The front projection has a 20th-century door and leaded casements.

Inside, the centre bay has flanking cruck trusses with original purlins and wind-braces that extend over the left bay. These bays also contain chamfered spine beams, with the left beam featuring moulded stops. There is a winder staircase aligned with the fireplace.
