Description
The Almshouses, a set of six almshouses originally built as ten, were constructed in 1675, as indicated by plaques on the building. They were founded by John King to provide housing for six men and four women. The almshouses are built from thin brick in Flemish bond, featuring a semi-dressed chamfered stone plinth, chamfered stone quoins, and coved stone eaves. The roofs are hipped and covered with old tiles, and there are six brick chimneys that were rebuilt in the 20th century.
The structure is designed in an H-plan with a central passage and stands two storeys tall. The central section consists of two bays, while each side wing projects two bays to both the front and rear. The northeast side has two-light chamfered stone mullion windows with 20th-century metal casements. The southwest front mirrors this design but includes four-light windows in the central bays. Some windows have been completely restored in the 20th century, and there are blind windows at the ends of the side wings.
The central passage and the doors leading into each wing feature chamfered stone frames. Above the passage entrances on either side are inscription plaques set in carved stone cartouches, which are adorned with coats of arms above them. The northwest and southeast sides have four-light windows in the outer bays and four two-light windows in the centre, all of which have been restored in the 20th century.
