Description

Wittington Winch is an 18th-century winch located on the Thames Towpath in Medmenham. It was last used in 1774 when Hurley Lock was opened. The winch features a wooden capstan with a metal cap and metal tie bars connecting to five wooden arms. It is partially sunk into a pit and supported by two retaining beams. This winch was used to haul barges up the flash lock at Hurley Weir.
