Description

Church End Cottage is a house that has been divided into two cottages, dating from the 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. The building is timber framed, featuring curved braces on the front wall, with painted brick and some plaster infill. It has a thatched roof and a brick chimney located to the right of the center, along with a later chimney at the left end.

The structure is one and a half storeys tall and consists of three bays, with the left bay now known as No.45 Church Lane and the right bays as No.1 Bates Lane. The right side has two eaves dormers and a ground floor extension from the 19th and 20th centuries, made of painted rubble stone and brick, topped with a slate lean-to roof that has a gablet over the front door. There is also a one-storey older addition at the right end, featuring a lower thatched roof and a partly hipped gable with a modern chimney.

On the left gable, there is a 19th-century extension made of flint and brick, with a slate roof and dentil eaves, rising to two storeys and containing a bay of three-light casements, along with a one-storey slate roof lean-to on the front. Inside, the right-hand ground floor room showcases a heavy chamfered spine beam with a roll stop and chamfered joists. The central chimney stack is timber framed with painted brick infill, and an oak mullioned window is exposed internally on the first floor.
