Description
Scott House, formerly known as The Rectory, was built in 1838 by George Gilbert Scott and is an early example of classical style architecture. The southern front is constructed of squared and coursed flint, while the other elevations are made of coursed cobble, featuring projecting gauged brick rusticated quoins and dressings. The house has a hipped slate roof with projecting eaves and a deep fascia, along with end chimneys that have dentil cornices.
This two-storey building has a three-bay southern front, with the central bay projecting under a triangular pediment. The central sash window has gauged brick heads, with a segmental arch on the ground floor featuring keyblocks, and a flat arch on the first floor with a keyblock only at the center. The first floor also has brick and flint apron panels. The entrance features a pair of three-fielded panel doors with a floral pattern fanlight set in a semicircular arched opening, supported by stone imposts and rusticated gauged brick voussoirs, approached by three stone steps.
On the northern elevation, there is a central pedimented projecting bay. To the west, there is a lower two-storey wing, and a one-storey service wing with a verandah supported by wooden posts. In front of this wing is a flint and brick wall with dentil brick coping. Inside, the house features a semicircular arch leading to the stair hall, a curved staircase with a continuous handrail, and three simple marble chimneypieces on the ground floor.
