Description

A row of four cottages dating from the mid-to-late 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are timber-framed with brick infill, and the front is rendered with incised masonry patterns. They have a plain-tile roof and brick ridge stacks. The cottages are arranged with two-unit plans and have an 8-window range over two storeys. Each cottage has a central door: Nos. 22 and 23 have four-panelled doors, part-glazed, while Nos. 24 and 25 have five-panelled doors. The doors are flanked by tripartite horned sash windows with plate-glass sashes, rendered sills, surrounds, and key blocks. The first floor has 2-light casement windows, two to each cottage. A rendered plinth is present, along with rendered rusticated quoins at each end and in the centre, between Nos. 23 and 24. A rendered eaves band is also visible. Nos. 22 and 23 have single-storey extensions with catslide roofs, and Nos. 24 and 25 have 2-storey 20th-century extensions. The rear wall of No. 22, visible in the roof space over the single-storey extension, reveals the original timber framing. Only No. 24 retains the original unpainted finish to the rendered front.
