Description
Wellwick Manor is a house dated 1616, with alterations from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed of rubble flint with stone dressings, and features brick facing and chimneys. The main southern front was refaced in 18th century brick, hiding the original 'E' plan layout. The roof is covered with old tiles and has parapets, with stone coping on the gables topped with finials. The building has flanking brick chimneys, with two octagonal shafts on the left and four on the right, all set on square brick bases. There are moulded strings and elaborately moulded concave offset heads. A central three-light dormer is present.
The house has two storeys and an attic, with a seven-bay front. An original six-light stone mullioned and transomed window is blocked and flanked by 18th century sash windows with flat brick arches. The ground floor features similar windows, except for the right-hand two bays, which have a wide casement under a segmental arch. The central door is ledged and set in a flat arched stone surround with carved spandrels and a label mould, below a stone panel displaying the carved arms of the Brudenell family.
The rear elevation has three gables, with the outer gables featuring three-light stone mullioned windows with hoodmoulds. The central gable is interrupted by a large brick chimney with three octagonal shafts, similar to the others, and a terracotta plaque inscribed with "AW 1616". There are also some two-light stone mullioned windows and others that are 18th century sashes. A door on the right has a two-light leaded fanlight and three brick steps. Later brick angle buttresses are present, and there is a one-storey range of outhouses attached to the northwest corner.
Inside, the ground floor room to the left has 18th century moulded panelling and cornice, with a fine arched niche on the rear wall. There is an 18th century staircase at the rear with twisted balusters and a moulded handrail. The ground floor rooms feature stop-chamfered doorcases, with one from the 17th century and the others restored. A 17th century winder stair leads from the first floor to the attic.
