Description
The Long Crendon War Memorial is located in a raised garden to the east of the junction of Chearsley Road and Bicester Road. The garden is enclosed by a low retaining wall, with access provided by three steps in the center of the wall that lead up to a paved area surrounded on three sides by a similar low stone wall. A further three steps at the rear wall lead up to a flowerbed.
The memorial itself stands approximately 3 meters tall and features a stone obelisk that is square in shape, rising from the pediment of a square plinth. This plinth is set on a three-stepped base. The main dedication on the front (west) face of the plinth reads, "IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES DURING/ THE GREAT WAR/ 'THEY DIED THAT WE MIGHT LIVE.’/ 1914 (3 NAMES)/ 1915 (9 NAMES)." The names of those who served in the First World War are listed on the other sides of the plinth, organized by year. Inscriptions for the Second World War are found on the front faces of the steps. All inscriptions are made with metal letters affixed to the stone.
