Description

The Poplars is a house dating from the early 19th century, representing a remodelling of an earlier building. The house is constructed of red and vitreous brick, with some herringbone brickwork concealed within the left gable. The right gable features thin brickwork from the early 18th century and retains vestiges of a band course and a moulded eaves-line cornice. The roof is covered with old tiles, and brick chimneys are situated between the left bays and to the right. The right gable features 19th-century cusped bargeboards. The building is two storeys high and comprises three bays. The windows are wooden casements with single horizontal glazing bars, with ground floor windows featuring narrow top lights. First-floor windows and the ground-floor windows to the left bays are 3-light, while the ground-floor right bays feature two 2-light windows, and another window is positioned above the door between the left bays. All windows have cambered heads, with the exception of the ground floor window on the left. The entrance lobby has a 20th-century door within a moulded architrave frame, beneath a flat, wooden hood supported by shaped brackets. A range attached to the right is constructed of thin brick with an old tile roof, half-hipped to the left, and a 20th-century off-centre brick chimney. This attached range is two storeys high, with the ground floor featuring two 3-light wooden casements with segmental heads. Internally, a ground floor room on the left side has a chamfered spine beam with elaborate stops.
