Description

The walls surrounding the kitchen garden at Ashfold School, which include a summer house, date from the 17th to early 18th century and have been altered over time. The southern side, facing the main house, is made of coursed rubble stone and features a moulded depressed archway at the center. There is some 17th-century thin brickwork at the southwest corner, while the rest of the wall is constructed from thicker red brick in English bond, complete with an off-set brick and stone plinth and some pilasters. There are altered doorways present.

The summer house located on the southern side of the wall near the eastern end is built from 17th-century materials, although its exact date is uncertain. The northern and eastern sides of the summer house are made of rubble stone with ashlar quoins and a single moulded stone opening. The southern and western sides each feature a chamfered segmental stone arch on semi-octagonal responds and an octagonal corner pier, with a moulded stone string above and a rendered brick pediment on the southern side. Additionally, there is another summer house at the western end of the southern wall, which is a 20th-century structure with a flat roof supported by rubble stone piers and is not considered of special interest.
