Description
Gardener's Cottage at Ashfold School is a building that dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and has been altered over time. The structure is made of thin brick, primarily in English bond with blue diaper patterns, and features a rubble stone plinth with chamfered coping. It has an old tile roof and external 20th-century brick chimneys on each gable. The cottage is two storeys tall with an attic and consists of three bays.
The gable ends have two-light stone mullion windows with moulded stone cornices. The lower window on the west end has been altered to serve as a doorway, while the lower window on the east end has been blocked by a chimney. Some of the windows have leaded lights. The west gable also features a similar single light window in the attic. The south front, which faces the garden, has a central door with a four-centred stone arch. Most of the windows on the north and south sides were inserted in the 19th and 20th centuries and include sashes and wooden casements.
Inside, the ground floor was originally a single space with stop-chamfered cross beams. It has massive tie beams, with those on the gable walls resting on moulded stone corbels, and those between the bays shaped into four-centred arches. The queen strut trusses were altered in the 17th century.
