Description

Burcott House is a house that originally dates from the 17th century, consisting of two bays that are positioned at right angles to the road. It may have once formed an L-plan layout. The house was extended to the south and refronted in the late 18th century, altered in 1830, and further extended to the northwest in the 20th century. The 17th-century bays feature timber framing with brick infill, which is exposed on part of the right return wall. The front of the house is covered with whitewashed render and has an old tile roof that is hipped to the right with a small gablet. There are brick chimneys present. The rear of the house is constructed of blue header brick with red brick dressings, a first-floor band course, and a moulded plinth and eaves. The building has two storeys and a three-bay front with four-pane sash windows. To the right of the central bay, there is a six-panelled door that has a wooden doorframe and an open pediment hood supported by cut brackets. An early 20th-century gabled wing is set back to the right. The rear features irregular altered casements. Inside, the 17th-century part of the house retains timber framing, a central fireplace aligned with the entry, and an original partly-moulded window frame in the north wall. The south wing contains a good early 19th-century staircase with a reeded handrail, and a drawing room of the same period that features reeded surrounds to the door and window frames, as well as to the plaster ceiling panels.
