Description
The Liberty Tomb, located beside the path 500 meters west of Mill Farm, is a chest tomb dating from 1777. It commemorates William Liberty, a brickmaker from Chorley Wood, who was buried here by his own desire after his death on April 21, 1777, at the age of 53, alongside his wife, Alice Liberty. The tomb features a thick limestone slab engraved with the inscriptions, set atop a chest with a chamfered plinth and fine-jointed red brick sides. Each end of the chest has a reeded surround with a panel cut into the brick, and there are two additional panels on the south face next to the path. A small granite slab is set into the brickwork at the west end. The tomb is aligned east-west and is enclosed by an iron railing. Historical records from Kelly in 1914 note that the tomb was situated in an orchard 200 yards east of the old church.
