Description

The Springs is a house that dates from the 15th century or early 16th century, with alterations and a northeast wing added in the 17th century. The building is cased in red brick, featuring some chequer pattern with blue headers from the 18th century. It has an old tiled roof with a hipped northwest corner and a half-hipped east gable, along with a large central chimney that has a corbelled head and a triangular shaft. The house has one storey and an attic, with an L-shaped plan.

The east elevation features the 17th-century wing on the right, which has a three-light casement window on each floor and a door to the cross passage in the corner. To the left, there are two two-light leaded windows with segmental arched heads and two flat-topped dormers above. The north elevation has five small windows and one similar dormer, along with a modern lean-to at the northwest corner. The west elevation includes two three-light casements with segmental arched heads and two similar dormers. The south gable has a modern door, a two-light casement above, and a projecting chimney to the right.

Inside, the north block is a hall house with a central open hall that features an arch-braced collar centre truss exposed on the first floor, and a cross passage with most of the original spere truss. The south bay retains the original floor, while the hall has a 17th-century inserted floor with a chamfered and moulded stopped spine beam. There is a large central stack, also from the 17th century, with moulded chimney beams resembling a Tudor arch above the inglenook. The 17th-century northeast wing has exposed beams and curved windbraces in the roof.
