Description
Lower Hartwell Farmhouse is a house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, constructed with timber framing and featuring brick infill and refronting from the 18th and early 19th centuries. It has an old tiled roof with a large central clustered brick chimney that has a corbelled head, along with projecting stacks on the south and west (rear) elevations. The house is two stories tall, and the east front facing the lane has five bays, with a gabled crosswing to the left-hand side. Each floor has a five-pane wide sash window with a segmental arched head. The second bay contains a three-light segmental arched casement with a swept eaves dormer above. To the right of the central stack, there is a half-glazed door leading to a cross passage, and a three-light casement window. The right-hand side also has a similar first-floor window that rises into the roof, along with a five-pane wide sash window and a four-light casement under the eaves. The rear elevation features a two-storey timber framed gabled dairy wing on the left-hand side, a catslide roof over the central section with a rubble stone wall, and a timber framed crosswing on the right-hand side. Inside, there is a large inglenook fireplace at the central stack with a finely moulded beam from the 15th or 16th century, which has carved spandrels and moulded jambs. The sitting room includes a chamfered and stopped spine beam, and the first floor showcases exposed timber framing, including a tiebeam and queenpost roof.
